The U.K.’s Mercury Prize shortlist for Album of the Year is here, and, per usual, it is a well-curated list of mainstream and alternative artists. Nominees have consistently gone on to shape the music landscape, judged not by their radio success, but inventiveness and novelty.

Last year’s candidates for Album of the Year included Roisin Murphy, Florence and the Machine, Slaves, Jamie xx, SOAK, and Wolf Alice. The prize went to composer Benjamin Clementine. Portishead, Pulp, The xx, and James Blake are just a few past winners of the 25-year-old event.

ANOHNI won in 2005 for her album I Am a Bird Now—at that time she was performing under the name Antony and the Johnsons. Though she resides full-time in New York City, she was born in Sussex, England, making her eligible for the prize.

David Bowie is nominated posthumously after passing away early this year from liver cancer. Radiohead receives their fifth nomination. Bat for Lashes receives her third. Laura Mvula, Michael Kiwanuka, and Savages receive their second. The grime genre sees two well-deserved nominations: Skepta and Kano.

Voting has opened online to the public, who will decide the final six albums up for the prize. The judges will choose one. Listen to a few of the nominees below to make your own informed decision.
