Wednesday night the stars came out for the Keep A Child Alive Black Ball 2016 at Hammerstein Balloom in New York City. The annual event, to support children and families affected by HIV, honored music producer and Sony Music Entertainment chief creative officer Clive Davis for his long term work in AIDS awareness. The event, described on their website as "an evening of music and philanthropy to reignite the spirit of 80's activism to end AIDS," streamed live on Tidal and was hosted by Alicia Keys.

Lupita Nyong'o, Baz Luhrmann, and Grandmaster Flash were among the reputable guests of the event, with moving performances by Alicia Keys, Salt-N-Pepa, A$AP Rocky and Patti Smith. Davis humbly accepted his award as the room stood in ovation. “Music entered my life by accident, but then it took over,” said Davis. He also gave a word of encouragement to Keys, “Alicia, I think you’re beautiful, I think you’re perfect. I now how hard it gets, but I swear it’s worth it.”

Keys, who appeared makeup-free, aptly likened the night to America’s current political atmosphere: “Clive Davis for president,” she joked. Her night consisted of big smiles alongside her “bro” Chance and “sis” Rocky. Towards the end of the night, she shared the stage with Smith, performing “Because The Night.” The night ended in a prophetic statement by Keys, “Because the night belongs to us”, Keys declared while hand-in-hand with Smith.
