Anna Sui Fall 2019 is a Psychedelic Dream

Go down the rabbit hole with this 60s-inspired romp through vibrant color and poptimism.

There are few Fashion Week shows as highly anticipated as Anna Sui. For her Fall 2019 collection, the designer explored swinging 60s fashion in a parade of brocade coats, ultra-bright jewel tones, and plaid skirts that are more pop-punk than schoolgirl. Sui stays true to her brand, bringing forth bold fabric choices and an unparalleled use of color in an age where minimalism is largely the norm. Accented by pom-poms, pastel bouffant wigs, fur trims, and glitter tights, the collection is undeniably fun — a breath of fresh air in a climate where fashion week can become too serious. Aptly titled “Poptimistic,” Anna Sui Fall 2019 provides a break in the status quo from the many toned-down ensembles we have been seeing on the runway this season.

When speaking about her influences, Anna Sui is quick to recall what first appeared on her mood board, which was recreated on a larger scale as the backdrop for the show. “I think this collection is all about color – vibrant, joyful, optimistic, super-saturated.  I based the palette on the neon bright colors of Victor Moscoso’s psychedelic posters, and the fancifully colored storyboards Mary Blair created for Walt Disney – especially for Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan.”

Kaia Gerber walked the runway in a plaid skirt set accented by metallic threading and a retro-inspired floral blouse. The look was finished off with brightly colored tights, which are emerging as a trend to watch this season. The highly sought-after model also closed the show in a sleeveless magenta dress with a high-low hemline. Bella Hadid also appeared on the runway in a royal blue faux fur coat with braided detailing. Other notable looks from the runway included a gold and maroon floral-printed puffer coat, an emerald suit set interlaced with a silver floral motif and finished with plumed feather sleeves and cuffs, and a sequined slip dress with floral accents.

One thing is for certain — Anna Sui’s psychedelic fantasy land has us wanting to fall down the rabbit hole. To view the collection’s standout moments, check out the slideshow below.
