For his first men’s pre-fall collection for Bottega Veneta, designer Tomas Maier took the brand’s motto, “When your own initials are enough,” to heart. The clothes, while intricately crafted and luxurious, maintain a simplicity allowing for the wearer’s personality to be at the forefront. Layers of shadow-dyed cotton, Japanese denim, needle-punched wool and colored leather are brought together to create a textural set of essentials for the modern man. A slew of monochrome looks is particularly striking, as are the brand’s famous accessories—in this case, calfskin briefcases and woven nappa leather totes.

When asked why this was the right time to launch a pre-fall collection for men, Maier told us: “It’s interesting for me to put the same emphasis on men’s that we do [on] women’s, and to have the chance to evolve the wardrobe of pieces that we offer for men… we can now evolve and refresh our staples, as well as propose new possibilities.” And how have these staples evolved? “Blazers have the soft Bottega Veneta construction that our clients rely on, while waxed leather elevates the blouson,” Maier explains. “Intarsia sweaters are given an extra dimension… with loose fitting turtlenecks for a masculine effect. The corduroy pants have a fuller leg and are fit quite low. It’s a good shape for a man after the skinny pant–at some point men need to evolve.”

Indeed, and Maier has paved the way for them to do so, subtly and with confidence.
