A month after the long-awaited birth of Beyoncé's twins, the singer has finally released the first photo of the two, named Sir Carter and Rumi (the latter a reference to the 13th century Persian poet).

The portrait stylistically harkens back to her announcement in February that she was carrying twins, an image depicting her knelt, veiled and resting her hands on her stomach. Beyoncé has shown interest in the iconography of different deities and incorporating spiritual elements in her Grammy's performance, where the songstress channelled Durga and Oshun, the Hindu and Yoruban goddesses of fertility. Here, we see her as the Virgin Mary, similarly veiled and dressed to Michelangelo's infamous Pietà with her flowing robes (by Palomo Spain).
