A Chanel fashion show is always a proper event, no matter how many surrounding shows may attempt to steal its thunder. Karl Lagerfeld never refrains from committing full-stop to an extravagant theme and making a powerful message about some pressing issue or concept. Common Karl logic would lead one to believe that his signature traits would be ramped up tenfold for the fashion house’s haute couture shows. Not this time.

For the Spring 2017 Haute Couture show, Chanel decided to keep the focus on the clothes and strip proceedings back a bit. Well, as much as Lagerfeld allowed them to, at least. The stage was still as eye-catching as ever, primarily consisting of a mirrored runway inspired by Coco Chanel’s atelier at 31 Rue Cambon. The shimmery mirrors seemed to act as a pseudo-spotlight of the fashion on display.

Eye-catching skirt-suits, shown in various pastels and tailored to perfection, opened the show, immediately pulling focus on a timeless look that emanates power. As the outfits slowly shifted from workplace-ready to stunning eveningwear, all constructed with classic Chanel stitching and sharp-cut silhouettes, each look still retained that special feminine power. If one were to label this show with a theme in Chanel tradition, it would simply be the rise of the woman. Their display of “pussy-bow” blouses is not just mere coincidence.

Even with the show’s relative simplicity, by Lagerfeld standards, the house couldn’t help but deliver a big and memorable finale. Chanel muse Lily-Rose Depp concluded the show in a voluptuous gown of pink ruffles, fitting for the most glamorous of brides.

In a Chanel world, the re-envisioned classics carry a subtle message of power and protest in the context of today’s political climate. By simply shining an even brighter light on women than usual, Chanel made a more powerful statement than ever.
