Early this morning, Harry Styles officially became a solo artist by releasing his debut single “Sign of the Times.” The One Direction alum premiered the track on Radio 1 in his home country of the UK this morning, calling it “the song I’m most proud of writing.” We can see (or hear) why.

The nearly six-minute-long ballad sends Harry into exactly the territory we expected him to delve into, a return of the epic space-age British rock mastered by the likes of David Bowie in years past, with a good touch of Lana-esque glam and gloom—undoubtedly influenced by the world's political state, and perhaps a common fatigue at the onslaught of bouncy, upbeat music to which we've become accustomed. As the grandiose guitars come in, Styles kicks into gear and sounds more powerful than we’ve ever heard him before, his voice flipping into yearning but self-assured falsettos.

Similar to former bandmate Zayn, he steps out of the shadows of his band and not only adopts a completely new sound, but begins to master in with one attempt. It’s easily the most ambitious solo record from the 1D boys to date. Listen below.
