Katy Perry opened her two-song set Sunday night at the One Love Manchester benefit with an emotional plea to "choose love." "It's not easy to choose love, is it?" asked the pop star, adding, "especially in moments like these, right. It can be the most difficult thing to do. But love conquers fear, and love conquers hate. And this love that you choose will give you strength. It's our greatest power."

The artist then lead the audiences—both in Manchester and those watching globally—in an exercise in compassion. "So now as you stand here—all of you here and all of you watching from wherever you are, standing next to a stranger or a family member or a friend or a loved one, let's just do this little exercise in love," she prompted. "Just touch the next person. Touch a person next to you. Make human contact. Tell them, 'I love you.' Look in their eyes. Say, 'I love you!' Do it. Everyone out there. Everyone at home. I encourage you to choose love even when it's difficult. Let no one take that away from you."

Perry then performed an acoustic version of her 2010 hit "Part of Me", and spread the positive energy with "Roar" from 2013's Prism.

The artist's outfit also paid tribute to the victims of the May 22 attack. Peeking out through cutouts in her white dress, Katy Perry wore a long sleeve top that was printed with photographs of the 23 victims who lost their lives.
