It didn’t take long to figure out what “IV” meant. After Kendrick Lamar caused rampant speculation by cleansing his Instagram and posting just one photo with the numeral IV, the rapper suddenly dropped his new single, “The Heart Part 4.” The track is the fourth part of a series of songs that were released in the early days of his career, and also the first single to his upcoming fourth album.

Kendrick holds nothing back on “The Heart Part 4,” delivering flows as rapid and insightful as ever while taking alleged shots at Big Sean and Donald Trump. The track starts as a smooth and thumping R’n’B groove before reducing itself down to a simple pulse that allows his spitfire verses and evocative lyrics to pull your heartstrings.

There was perhaps no one better than Kendrick to capture the immense anger and ever-changing emotions that we’re all experiencing post-election, and he delivers on first attempt. His punches at Trump are both thrilling and remarkably accurate, making sure to call out Russia’s potential involvement in the election and the fact that “electoral votes look like memorial votes.” It’s these direct remarks that remind us to always hold him accountable for his questionable actions and not be afraid to resist, something Kendrick does so effortlessly. As he reminds us, “How many leaders gon’ tell you the truth after me?”

Perhaps most notably, Kendrick declares “y’all got ‘til April the 7th to get y’all sh*t together” to conclude the track, potentially hinting at a release date for his upcoming album. The timing would make sense considering the date is a Friday and that he’s due to perform at Coachella on the following weekends. Let us hope.
