Last night, Kristen Stewart debuted her new look at the Los Angeles premiere of her new film Personal Shopper. The actress has been playing with her hair styles for a while now, but has never done anything quite this dramatic. Talk about generating publicity for your projects.

While she hasn't made a public statement on the inspiration behind the cut, it's hard not to comment on its timing; Today is International Women's Day and also the Day Without A Woman strike. Is Stewart making a commentary on outdated, and unnecessary, gender identifiers?

In her V106 cover story interview, Stewart remarks on the demands of the media, especially the red carpet: "I was in front of 500 cameras promoting my films, but not the one. Not the intimate one. Not the one that I really care about." She followed that sentiment up on a more positive note for the Sunday Times saying, "But considering I had so many eyes on me, I suddenly realized [my private life] affects a greater number of people than just me. It was an opportunity to surrender a bit of what was mine, to make even one other person feel good about themselves." With last night's unveiling, it's clear that she is taking the power back from the paparazzi and mapping her own narrative.

Stewart follows her pop culture contemporaries Halsey and Amandla Stenberg, who have both shaved their long locks and bleached the remaining. Katy Perry, too, recently cut her hair short and bleached it. 2017 is starting to see a new trend.
