Now that Lorde gave herself the green light, she just keeps on giving us more. The Kiwi singer surprise released “Liability,” what she describes as another chapter of her highly anticipated sophomore album Melodrama, which finally has a release date of June 16.

If “Green Light” was the push she needed to break free of her volatile relationship, then “Liability” is the following late night introspection after the sparks flare out, as she comes to realize how her flaws played a role in the demise—and how they affect the others in her life. With nothing but an Elton-esque piano track backing her stunningly restrained vocals, devastating lyrics like “The truth is I am a toy that people enjoy / ’Til all of the tricks don't work anymore” manage to cut even deeper. Lorde sounds more vulnerable and raw than ever, but her calm self-assuredness never disappears.

Once again, Lorde proves her reputation as one of pop’s most self-aware and evocative songwriters, making the three-month wait for Melodrama all the more painful. Listen to “Liability” below.
