Marc Jacobs has a knack for finding eclectic muses to represent his namesake brand—a mix of mainstream media darlings (he was one of the first to introduce Kendall Jenner to the fashion fold) and the underground elite. Most recently, he’s found inspiration in Cindy Crawford’s 15-year-old daughter, Kaia Gerber, who stars as the newest face of Marc Jacobs beauty.

While past muses have ranged from Bette Midler and Winona Ryder last year to Edie Campbell and Elle Fanning, models that seem disconnected from one another and the fashion industry in general, Jacobs reveals to Vogue the overlap as a collective, symbiotic relationship between him and the model, “You got with who you’re working with,” said Jacobs. In this way his muses “connect the dots” for his creativity.

Though it helps to have a stunning supermodel mother, Jacobs says he chose Gerber to be part of the campaign because he finds her “interesting" (he discovered her first via a photo taken by Kendall Jenner). Jacobs looks for people who catalyze his creativity, and Gerber did just that. “My first thought was that she was beautiful and would make a great subject,” Jacobs says of his thought process behind the young muse, “She seems interesting. There isn’t one characteristic across the board. I think there’s room for everything.”
