Last time we heard from Miss Miley Cyrus, musically speaking, she was covering herself in glitter glue and making her deepest sorrows known on her raw psychedelic opus, Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz. Before that, she went full-throttle urban-pop and embraced a little crazy on her major comeback album Bangerz. Like the best artists, Miley has proven herself to be a chameleon, constantly changing her image and sound to reflect her life at that moment. And for her impending return this year, she’s going back to basics in an unprecedented way.

Miley announced that her new single, “Malibu,” will be released next Thursday, May 11, and spilled all the details about her new era in an interview with Billboard. Described as “controversial as its sweetness” by the artist herself, the song is an ode to fiancé Liam Hemsworth and their life in her newfound home of Malibu. But more importantly, the song signals an almost shocking return to her roots.

“Malibu” is described as “gimmick-free pop rock” and the first offering on an album that shows off her voice more than ever before, filled with acoustic offerings and “epic” pop tracks that harken back to the early days. The photo shoot reflects this new carefree sound: gone are the nipple pasties and unitards, and back in are denim cut-offs, cowboy boots, and long hair.

Her stripped-down approach was inspired by her desire to reach out to the people who were repelled by her new image (aka Trump supporters and country fans) and attempt to cultivate some much-needed understanding and unity in the face of today’s political climate, while still expressing the liberal ideals she campaigned for during the election. Expect songs about Hillary Clinton and women’s rights on the upcoming album alongside her more personal DIY tracks.

“I like talking to people that don’t agree with me, but I don’t think I can do that in an aggressive way,” she explained to Billboard. With the new album, prepare for both a whole new Miley and a return to what made us love her in the first place.
