A new era is upon us. Miley Cyrus has returned with her new single, “Malibu,” which premiered on Beats 1 today, as well as an accompanying music video, directed by longtime collaborator Diane Martel and also starring her beloved dog Emu. As promised last week, the track is a loving ode to fiancé Liam Hemsworth and heralds another new sound and image from Miley — although this may be her most familiar soundscape yet.

“Malibu” is a lush slice of effervescent pop-rock, swapping the crashing electric guitars with campfire riffs and sunny melodies evocative of the Beach Boys (but slightly cooler). Her lyrics are just as endearingly raw and rambling as her stuff from Miley Cyrus and Her Dead Petz, with her soft and fuzzy vocals even adding a familiar psychedelic touch. But this time around, Miley’s in love rather than despair, and she’s not afraid of showing it.

The video embraces her lovestruck mood as of late, as Miley simply dances and roams the beautiful shores and grassy landscapes of Malibu, with Emu and a dose of colorful balloons in tow. It's surprising intimate but still very Miley, showing what a good place she's in right now.

Together, the song and video mesh her loving hippie child side with her twangy pop-rock roots and a dose of dreamy beach vibes to bring together what is both her most refreshing era and a calming return to home, something that's extra comforting in today's heated political climate. It's even surprising for the popstar — "I never would have believed you if three years ago, you told me I'd be here writing this song" says it all. Welcome back, Miles.
