From Independence Day speech to serenade

Yesterday, in honor of July 4th, President Obama delivered a heart-warming speech on family, patriotism and military service. Through humbling words, he reminded viewers the weighted significance of Independence Day for America, where “we marvel at everything that’s been done before” in the fight for freedom. He added that “we also have to reconnect ourselves to make sure that everybody in this country is free.”

With musicians Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe by his side, he moved on to applaud their advocacy, positive attitude and admirable work as role models. What followed was slightly more surprising: POTUS took his opportunity on the mic to sing happy birthday to his eldest daughter, Malia. He was accompanied by both Lamar and Monáe as the crowd began joyfully chanting the tune with him, before 18 year old Malia ran on stage to reciprocate with a hug. The scene was yet another jewel in Obama’s crown of inspirational moments, loving attitude and frankly, was a the best possible finale to any Independence Day speech. Watch the full speech below.
