Peter Copping, the creative director of Oscar de la Renta, has announced he will be stepping down from his role. In an issued statement he explained, “After almost two years at Oscar de la Renta, personal circumstances require me to return to Europe. I have loved my time in New York where I hope to return at some point in the future,”

Copping has served as the creative mind behind the New York-based brand for the past two years, delivering designs that stay true to the house’s classic and elegant femininity. Before being personally selected as predecessor by de la Renta himself back in 2014, Copping acted as artistic director at Nina Ricci, backed by previous stints at both Louis Vuitton and Sonia Rykiel. Profiting from such rich experience, his time at the brand has been positive, each collection warmly received by the press. And although he has done little to drastically revamp the brand’s style, he has succeeded in upholding the Oscar de la Renta foundation of sophistication.

As of yet, there has been no official statement of whom Copping will hand over the reins. However, as always with these things, speculation is stirring by the hour; Monse co-founders Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim are speculated to take over. Currently consulting for Carolina Herrera, the duo have history back at Oscar de la Renta and the unexpected opening could be what pulls them back. But of course, before dreaming up new directions the brand may be heading, we’ll have to sit tight and wait for an official announcement of Copping's replacement.
