Today, Pirelli unveils the 2017 edition of their annual calendar. For years, the luxury tire company has been more known for its now legendary calendar. The item, usually only given to politicians, VIP customers, and other notable figures, has become iconic for its spell-binding photographs of renowned models. In recent years, the calendar has also served as a platform for photographers to comment on the representation of women in the media, and this year’s edition continues that trend.

Photographer Peter Lindbergh was given the reigns to the calendar this year. Rather than shooting artistic nude portraits of models in the usual Pirelli fashion, Lindbergh followed in the footsteps of last year’s photographer Annie Leibowitz and chose women that have inspired him personally, dressing them in natural minimalistic clothing, and capturing their images in black and white.

"I wanted to show women in a different way,” Lindbergh said about his inspiration for the shoot. “I did this by asking actresses who have always played an important role in my life and to try and get as close to them as possible through my photos.”

These world-famous actresses include Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Penelope Cruz, Nicole Kidman, Rooney Mara, Lupita Nyong’o, Julianne Moore, Uma Thurman, Alicia Vikander, Robin Wright, Zhang Ziyi, Jessica Chastain, Charlotte Rampling, and Lea Seydoux. Lindbergh also selected Moscow professor Anastasia Ignatova after meeting her at a dinner in 2015 and being stunned by her beauty.

“In a time when women are represented in the media and everywhere else as ambassadors of perfection and youth, I thought it was important to remind everyone that there is a different beauty, more real and truthful and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests, a beauty which speaks about individuality, courage to be yourself and your own private sensibility,” Lindbergh said.

In behind-the-scenes videos, the ladies explained how they felt posing for Lindbergh’s lens. Thurman said the experience felt "like an interview, but with a camera”. For Cruz, it was "almost like seeing into your soul.” The photos were shot both in a studio and on location in major landmarks around the world, including New York’s Times Square and the French beach of Le Touquet.

This year marks the 44th edition of the calendar, and the third that Lindbergh has shot, making him the first photographer to shoot three editions of the calendar. Check out some shots from the calendar below.
