Issey Miyake's Pleats Please launched in 1993, but its story is only now being told. Midori Kitamura's Pleats Please Issey Miyake (Taschen, $40), which chronicles the favorite collections of curators and interns alike, was launched this week at the Issey Miyake store in TriBeCa. The simple process of pressing polyester into a ripple or multidimensional fold is represented from the lowest-end stores imaginable all the way here, a beautiful gallery-like store in New York's most expensive neighborhood. The brand is as elegant as it is self-aware, creating a fragrance for a "pleated" bottle and throwing this adorable party complete with green-centered pink-frosted mini cupcakes, while stretching its fabrics between many complex pleats observant of classic Japanese technique.
