If Prada’s Fall 2017 show is any indication, Miuccia Prada has been yearning for the days of her naive youth. Walking into the space near Prada’s main headquarters, guests were greeted by Ikea-sized bedroom vignettes weaving the runway, complete with twin bed, miniature lamp, and ottoman seats for attendees. The walls were covered with the wanderlust and love-driven fantasies of a teenage girl — maps, postcards, and heartthrobs galore — establishing the collection’s scrapbook inspirations early on.

Prada’s latest offering takes a hodgepodge of inspirations from various unrelated time periods and processes them into whimsical and colorful filters, creating a blend that somehow remains cohesive and typically Prada. The opening looks established the dreamlike vibe with stripper cowgirl bra-tops and brown suede trousers, something Xtina would wear if she decided to glam up during the “Dirrty” era. Others turned formal suits into cozy knitwear get-ups, wrapped in the most colorful muted Z Gallerie print one could imagine.

The fuzzy dreams that took preteens’ closets are reimagined into oversized coats and preppy sweater sets, never holding back on the felt. In fact, Prada doesn’t refrain from any materials, bombarding the collection with all the feathers, beads, and felt left in Milan. Color-blocking fur gets reconstructed from its usual coat shape into hems on blocky ballgowns and daring hoods, the statement pieces of the show.

However, nothing this season embodies the basic teen dream more than the footwear. Typical flip-flops get oversized bursts of fur, knitted snow-boots are constructed into the furry Uggs of our darkest fantasies, and cowgirl boots get an outing in metallic shades (someone call Lady Gaga). Miuccia Prada has succeeded in molding the legendary fashion house with our former preteen closets without verging on tackiness or looking too try-hard. That is Prada at its most effortless.
