Premiere: Cub Sport and Mallrat Live Large

Having caught fire on social media, fellow Aussie indie-poppers invade in “Video.”

Alt-pop quartet Cub Sport is a shipper’s dream scenario rendered real: after releasing their first few EPs, two of the Brisbane-based crew’s members, Tim Nelson and Sam Netterfield, came out as a couple in 2016. That hasn’t slowed the imaginations of the growing pack of Cub Sport followers, many of whom joined after last year’s Dolan Twins-directed video for “Hawaiian Party.“ Inventive fan accounts include @CubSportBot, dutifully tweeting lyrics hourly (“Cause I’m changing everyday/I feel you there I’m not scared/And I want you around for this”), and @CubbieHubbies, a hallucinatory photo diary inspired by Nelson, Netterfield and their two dogs, Missy and Evie.

If the byproducts of fame range from the wonderful (meeting their idol, Savage Garden’s Darren Hayes) to the uncanny, Cub Sport seems well aware, using the phenomena of celebrity as inspiration for their newest video. In the aptly titled “Video,” featuring fellow Aussie export Mallrat, the theme of surveillance becomes a full, drag-inflected fantasy.

Says Nelson: “The ‘Video’ video is an ode to some of my favorite 2000s celebs, who rose from an invasion of privacy and built entire empires out of it. I drew inspiration from these icons for both the concept and styling of the clip. For me, ‘Video’ represents a moment of taking back my power and believing in myself. It’s about celebrating my growth and all the good things that have come along with that.”
