Today, exclusively on V, singer Ariana and the Rose, who splits her time between New York and London, premieres complimentary double-sided A tracks: “Dirty Dancing” and “Survival of the Fittest.” On her music, Ariana says, “The songs are very visual. I love listening to lyrics that paint pictures, so I push myself to write that way as well.” “Survival of the Fittest” carries that methodology into its visuals, too. In the video, Ariana dances in the dark, while glittery and galactic lights float around her. It’s not a high budget film, but one that aptly accentuates her sound.

It also perfectly ties into the narrative of her second song “Dirty Dancing,” which she says, “is most literally about breaking up with someone in a roller disco. I love matching a bit of playfulness with heartbreak, you have to laugh through it somehow." The theatrical nature of her work likely stems from her off-Broadway baptism at the age of 14, which eventually forayed into pursuing a degree at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.

Like other alumni of the school (Lady Gaga, Karen O.), Ariana’s music showcases her vocal strength against the backdrop of accessible, dance floor, pop. To call Ariana and the Rose a new singer would be misleading; she has been releasing solid songs under the moniker since late 2013, but here marks a notable progression. Where she goes next is up to her; she has the voice, the look, the drive, and therefore the potential to truly sing amongst the stars.
