AFTER YEARS TRYING TO SOLVE THE #R8 MYSTERY, RIHANNA HAS FINALLY REWARDED US WITH ANTI

V95 cover girl Rihanna has just surprised us all by dropping her much-hyped album Anti nearly two years after it was first announced. The Barbadian hitmaker has been heavily promoting her eighth studio album in recent weeks from antiDIARY.com, a mobile-only website created in partnership with Samsung, who is sponsoring the release and its supporting tour. Obscure video clips posted to the site over the last few weeks have shown Rihanna tattooing a man’ s face, sinking into a blue bath, and walking through a maze-like structure while her outfits transformed, among other things. Though the through line isn’ t immediately clear, it’ s likely to reveal itself quickly with the album now available for all to dissect.

The three singles from Anti—“FourFiveSeconds,” “Bitch Better Have My Money,” and “American Oxygen”—were equally dissimilar, albeit wildly popular across the board. If the first song (done in collaboration with Paul McCartney and Kanye West) exposed a softer side of Rihanna, the latter two revealed her harder, more political edge.

The album cover, designed by Israeli artist Roy Nachum, is a work of art in and of itself. It features an image of Rihanna on her first day of daycare, holding a black balloon with a gold crown shielding her eyes. Overlaid with a smattering of red paint and a poem in Braille by Chloe Mitchell, it’ s unlike any of her previous cover art. After its reveal back in October, Rihanna had this to say of her creative choices: “Sometimes the ones who have sight are the blindest.” Mitchell further explained to Rolling Stone that the poem deals with being misunderstood, but works to reframe that outsider status as a positive thing. Its a message thats perfectly in tune with Rihanna, an artist whose modus operandi is to shatter the rules.
