At this point, it should come as no surprise when Rihanna wears something off the beaten fashion path, and yet time and time again it feels new, each look growing more daring than the last. In her latest music video with Calvin Harris, for their collaborative track “This Is What You Came For,” the singer sports a single look: a glittery jumpsuit that the Internet has taken to calling a silver sack. It’s true; the loose-fitting ensemble is far from the tight, and often see through, pieces she wears with ease, but that kind of seems like the point.

Instead, Rihanna via her longtime stylist Mel Ottenberg gives her stamp of approval to fashion industry newcomer, 2016 Pratt graduate Isabel Hall. To find out how this much-buzzed-about look landed in the video to a potential song of the summer, we reached out to Ottenberg to find out why Riri skipped the Dior and went for the unknown instead.

“I use seasoned designers and big houses all the time, but I also like working with new blood and fresh energy. Racks of clothes feel lame if it's all the same stuff everyone else has,” says Ottenberg after freshly landing from Firenze, having attended the Pitti Uomo Menswear shows.

But how does a man busy with dressing one of the world’s biggest pop stars, styling brand campaigns, and bringing fashion to life in magazines like V, find time to find what others can’t? “[It] totally depends! Sometimes I find someone and keep in touch, sometimes my assistants find great talents and they foster a relationship with them. This year, in New York, I went to Pratt and Parsons graduate shows, and was on the jury for the Kering Prize at Parsons.”

It was at the Pratt show that Ottenberg first saw Isabel Hall’s silver jumpsuit, but it was not exactly the first he had heard about it. “Actually Isabel is Adam Selman's intern, and he told me in advance of the Pratt fashion show that there was a jumpsuit I was going to gag for.”

So are there any others on the stylist’s radar? “Yes! But I'm keeping that to myself till stuff comes out,” teasing only that “there's another designer from the Pratt show that I used in a V shoot with Mario Sorrenti, in the [September] issue. Stay tuned!
