After a nearly two-year absence from the music scene, Shamir has surprised the world by releasing a new album for free on SoundCloud. His sophomore record, Hope, was recorded only last weekend as he considered quitting music, beginning to resent the high-gloss polish his music and image were given as part of a major label (in an interview with Out, the singer states he was dropped from XL Recordings). This album is a direct response to that system, as he wrote, produced, and mixed almost every song, as well as played every instrument heard.

“When I would listen to immaculate recordings with my friends, their praise over the quality of the art as opposed to the art itself made me feel really sad for music as a medium in general,” the artist explained in a revelatory post on SoundCloud. “My music only feels exciting for me if its in the moment, and that’s what this album is.”

His newly-adopted rebellious spirit shows in the experimental sounds of the album, consisting of 10 tracks which, in his words, combines “pop music, outsider music, and lo-fi music.” It’s an intense journey, where his dreamy vocals swirl alongside fuzzy synth lines and grungy electric guitar licks while he becomes vocal about his headspace and lack of creative motivation. “I’m not gonna lie, this album is hard to listen to, but it was even harder for me to share,” he said.

Shamir also recorded an emotional cover of the Blake Babies’ “Rain” for the record and promised that more new music is on the way. For now, the daring effort is currently streaming on SoundCloud and available for free download.
