Sia has developed a tried-and-true formula for music videos: intricate choreography, a lack of presence from the artist herself, and Maddie Ziegler. In an era of continual reinvention, we find the consistency refreshing. And in the video for “The Greatest,” her new collaboration with Kendrick Lamar released today, all of these signature traits are as present as ever—with important cultural significance, seemingly dedicated to the victims of the shooting at Pulse nightclub in Orlando earlier this summer.

The video (which does not contain Kendrick’s verse) shows wunderkind dancer Ziegler in her natural element doing manic choreography, but instead of performing as a solo act, she moves among 49 young dancers—49 being the number of lives taken in the shooting. The video begins with the hashtag #WEAREALLYOURCHILDREN, and comes full circle in the end with the troupe of children dropping to the floor on what appears to be a club. In a display of mourning, Ziegler dons a black bob instead of the classic platinum blonde, and cries rainbow tears as the video comes to a emotional close. The video is a haunting, yet effective, tribute to this summer's tragedy, though the song's positive lyrics provide an uplifting undertone.
