Donald Trump may have won the election, but he didn’t win the votes of the majority of America. Hillary Clinton has officially won the popular vote by over 200,000 votes, and yet she is not our next President due to the electoral college system, which can let individual states with a lesser population override the will of the majority, as it did this week.

Each state’s electors will officially put in their state’s votes on December 19, but these electors are not completely required to vote how their state did. That’s where this clever petition comes in.

The petition calls for these electors to place their allotted votes for Hillary Clinton, no matter who their state voted for, for the sake of our country’s people. This practice, which deems these people “faithless electors,” is restricted in 29 states, but the punishment is no more than a small fine and a crowd of Trump supporting bigots getting mad, which is no worse than what we’ve already dealt with this year. This strategy would use an outdated and negligent system against itself in order to ensure that the truly popular choice is put in power.

The incredible thing about this prospect is that's it's not completely out of reach. The New York Post has already confirmed that at least two electors may not be able to stomach voting for Trump and may vote for Hillary regardless. She would need just over 20 electors to take away Trump's lead in votes, a tall but potentially reachable order.

As of press time, the petition has garnered over 600,000 signatures and is fast rising in the hopes to get to a million supporters. If you care about the near future of our people, Muslims, minorities, and immigrants especially, putting your name on the petition certainly will not hurt. Admittedly, the prospect of this going through is a long shot, but if this election has proven anything, it is that absolutely nothing is impossible.
