Netflix released the first teaser for Spike Lee's 10-episode TV adaption of his 1986 film, She's Gotta Have It. The series, coming November 23, marks Lee's directorial TV series debut—which seems fitting as the original film launched Lee's career. The original low-budget indie film, shot in just 12 days, quickly became a cult classic and gained rapid success, grossing over $7 million in the box office. The pioneering film addressed sexual stereotypes, self-discovery, and creative aspirations through the main character, Brooklyn-based artist Nola Darling, originally played by Tracy Camilla Johns.

The new reboot stars DeWanda Wise as Nola Darling with other cast members including Chyna Layne, Joie Lee, Ilfenesh Hadera, Sydney Morton, and Margot Bingham. “We are getting an opportunity to revisit these memorable characters who will still be relevant and avant-garde 3 decades later,” Lee told Deadline. In addition, Lee's wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, has joined the project as an executive producer, as, it was her idea to adapt the indie film into a series, according to Lee.
