Leave it to Stella McCartney to take the next major leap toward a more sustainable future in fashion. On Tuesday, the luxury vegan label announced a new longterm collaboration with Parley for the Oceans—a company that is wholly dedicated to protecting marine wildlife—that will see McCartney using synthetic fabrics made from recycled ocean plastic in her clothing designs. The news comes just in time for World Oceans Day (June 8).

For anyone who has doubts that the designer will be able to quite literally spin garbage into gold, McCartney reassured the New York Times, “To take something that is destructive and turn it into something that’s sexy and cool, how can that not be luxury?” She added, “Is a recycled plastic ever going to be something people think is a luxury? If they don’t notice it and if they feel that living on this planet longer is a luxury, then yes, to me that’s my idea of luxury.”

The partnership with Parley began with a sneaker that McCartney designed with adidas, made with a yarn fiber created from fishing nets, debris, and bottles picked up in the ocean. Considering that as much as 12.7 million tons of plastic waste enter the oceans annually, these advancements could have a huge impact on protecting our world's water systems. In a video announcing the collaboration, the brand also points out that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.

McCartney has said that her designs featuring the recycled material could be in stores as early as next month. With any hope, this new collaboration will continue the designer's trend of inspiring others in the industry to take the same steps forward toward sustainability.
