Earlier this month, Tegan & Sara, your alt-friend’s favorites, dropped their 8th studio album, Love You to Death, following 2013’s Heartthrob. The ten-track album hears the rocking sisters are their pop finest, in what is sure to be their biggest commercially successful record to date

For the Quin sisters, guitars are secondhand nature, often (if not entirely) making up the bulk of their discography, but on Love You to Death you’ll be hard pressed to finding a single string. In an interview with the ladies, and the album’s producer, Greg Kurstin, for Entertainment Weekly, the missing element was explained: “There was still a bit of, ‘Maybe we should keep the guitars because that’ll be familiar,’” Sara says. “I just don’t feel those hesitations or obligations.” Adds Kurstin, “This time we felt liberated to go wherever we wanted to go.”

Where they went was straight into the mainstream, where artists like Taylor Swift and Katy Perry were already embracing them. The move has brought them full circle in a way. Back in April, songwriter and producer Jack Antonoff told Buzzfeed that “You would go into the studio with an artist and you’d be like, ‘What are you into lately?’” he says. “And they’d be like, Heartthrob. What kinda vibe do you wanna do? Heartthrob.

That recent embrace has introduced Tegan & Sara to new audiences, causing a rift between the girls and their day one fans. “"As much as it might have made it seem like we were selling out, what we were really doing was stepping up and we were pushing our way in to a world that did not have anything representing us,” Tegan told Rolling Stone.

While they work to fuse the fans, their reach grows ever wider. With Love You to Death, there is little doubt that Tegan & Sara will continue to influence pop’s biggest. This time though, not from the fringes, but from the front of the pack.
