Starting their relationship by shooting one of his earliest campaigns, from 1989 to 1993 designer Isaac Mizrahi allowed up and coming British photographer Nick Waplington exclusive behind-the-scenes access to capture his work and play. Spending years snapping pictures of the designer in fittings and fashion week prep to out in the clubs, the photographer has transformed these iconic shots into a book: The Isaac Mizrahi Pictures: New York City 1989-1993.

At an event last night at Rizzoli Bookstore in New York, both Isaac Mizrahi and Nick Waplington were featured on a panel that covered everything from the origins of Waplington’s book to the fashion and photography industry. The book originated three years ago when Waplington called Mizrahi and told him that he was thinking about doing a book of the photographs of the designer that he took in the late '80s and early '90s. “I assumed we would be in contact about it and he never contacted me about it, do I forgot about it,” said Mizrahi. “Then three months ago he was like ‘It really is a good book.’” Waplington estimates that he has done over 30 books that he has given away to the designers and creatives they are focused on.

One of Waplington’s greatest attributes, according to Mizrahi, is his ability to be a fly on the wall. He prefers it that people don’t know he is snapping photos of them because he doesn't want them posing or showing off in front of the camera. Mizrahi remembers Waplington in the clubs; while everyone else was doing drugs, he was taking pictures, hence the extensive collection of candid photographs and Waplington’s '90s club kid culture snaps featured in the book.

After the panel the designer and photographer signed The Isaac Mizrahi Pictures, which is out now.
