With over 1.5 billion views on YouTube, the music video for Sia’s “Chandelier” has brought Maddie Ziegler international recognition, thanks to the 14-year-old’s mind- boggling dance moves. “It’s so weird,” she says. “When I did it, I literally told my friends, ‘It’s not going to be a big deal.’ And within the first night, we had over a million views, and I was just like, woah.” Her performance catapulted the young star into fame, and now she has a clothing line called Maddie, for which she designs denim. She even recently released a book, The Maddie Diaries, that details her tumultuous stint on the reality show Dance Moms.

The next logical career step? Acting, of course. Audiences got their first look in the film The Book of Henry with Naomi Watts. “I was intimidated for sure,” she admits about debuting alongside such an experienced costar. “But I jumped into the role right away.” In August’s animated ballet film Leap!, she voices the villain to Elle Fanning’s protagonist. Playing the heel was a challenge for Ziegler, but having been in the dance world since she was a toddler, she had a lot of experience to draw on. “I was just channeling other girls who have been rude, because there are a lot of mean ballerinas and dancers,” she notes.

“It’s a competitive world. Everyone’s just really hungry for it.” Sounds a lot like Hollywood, but based on her success with so many other ventures, we think Ziegler will be just fine.
