Carine Roitfeld is not a stylist, she is a storyteller. In 1999, despite her in-demand status, Roitfeld gladly contributed to the first issue, helping to define V’s style in its infancy, like the first look down a runway. "V is all about creativity. I remember in the ’90s, everything was possible," Roitfeld recalls. "V was like a factory where talented people needed to contribute. Everyone had to stop by this ‘school’ of creativity, all talented people.”

In the years since, her contributions have ranged from single stories that showcase her signature style to covers that became instant classics, such as her Testino-lensed Chanel cover for V7, complete with monogrammed double C’s, and her steamy, golden, Gucci swimwear cover for V4. Though Roitfeld typically prefers models and the mode, she has created iconic images of celebrities for the magazine as well, such as her V76 cover story with Jennifer Lopez, in which she and Testino threw the pop star into the boxing ring, or V73, Roitfeld’s triumphant tribute to the late Elizabeth Taylor, which included a cover story that saw Kate Winslet playing the grande dame.

Of course, one of the editor’s most iconic contributions to the magazine came in the form of V10, aptly titled Generation X-centric. High-class chic mixed with the avant-garde alternative, the cover is a perfect representation of the aesthetic V set out to establish in its early years—made possible by Roitfeld, who placed her faith in Gan, lending her legitimacy to a publication that was only just beginning.
