Certain subjects have been a part of the V family since the magazine was born, their influence quantified not necessarily by the number of images in which they appear, but rather the ways in which they have lent inspiration time and time again. One such example comes in the form of a couple: late, great music legend David Bowie and his beloved spouse Iman, whose marriage—a union built on passion, love, and art—exemplifies everything V is about. Bowie first appeared on the cover of V18, in which he selected his own heroes to feature at the front of the book, ranging from Henry Darger to Lee Alexander McQueen, even writing each of their profiles. Just three issues later, Iman made her first appearance on the cover, also photographed by Testino. In Iman’s cover story for the issue, former V editor Alix Browne wrote: “Iman is a big believer in fate. It was fate that landed her in New York so many years ago. It was fate that brought her into contact with her now husband of more than ten years, David Bowie (they were set up on a blind date).” As fate would have it, they found Stephen Gan as well. He recalls that Bowie and Iman stopped by the office during the magazine’s early years to check in and see how it was going (Bowie even contributed the first video to appear on V’s website the day that it launched). They offered their invaluable insight and creative input as what Gan would call the magazine’s first celebrity contributing editors—and V’s fashionable fairy godparents.
