There are certain fashion photographers who eclipse the medium, ascending to a mythical status within the industry. David Sims is one of these photographers, thanks to his highly conceptual work that pushes fashion to its artistic limits. Equally talented members of the fashion flock have gravitated towards Sims’s expertise over he years, resulting in partnerships that have become legendary in their own right. This sample of Sims’s work for V above is proof that his photographs (in collaboration with top hairstylists Guido Palau and fashion editors Joe McKenna and Andrew Richardson) are among the most daring and fashion-forward ever published in our pages.

Gender noncompliant, discomforting, provocative, and seductive, Sims helped identify the boundary-breaking aesthetic of the mid-2000s, often featuring supermodels Raquel Zimmermann, Gisele Bündchen, Iseline Steiro, and a panoply of male models in various states of high-fashion drag. As Guido recalls: “My favorite story was in issue 50, ‘Spellbound.’ It was styled by Joe McKenna with Raquel. It was cold and raining and we shot a lot on location over three days, but the images are some of my most favorite I’ve ever been a part of.”
