Though Karl Lagerfeld has made countless contributions to V in the form of his collections for storied fashion houses Chanel and Fendi, perhaps more precious are the times he has stepped behind the camera for the magazine.

Lagerfeld lensed a portfolio of the industry’s reigning editors, from Carine Roitfeld (then editor-in-chief of Vogue Paris) and Franca Sozzani of Vogue Italia to Ingrid Sischy, Cathy Horyn, and more in V11—the same issue for which he took backstage photos at Hedi Slimane’s debut show for Dior Homme. It was early stories like these, made possible by Lagerfeld’s undisputed influence, that helped establish V as a publication that not only covers fashion, but the backstage machinations of the industry.

The designer's other contributions have ranged from icons—Jerry Hall, Miley Cyrus, Naomi Campbell, Mariah Carey—to stories that speak to Lagerfeld’s penchant for shocking the upper class, as he has done for Chanel, season after season. One of the best examples of this is found in V63, the Size Issue, in which Lagerfeld allowed entertainer Miss Dirty Martini entrance into 31 Rue Cambon, the original home of Coco’s empire. As the designer posed to Cyrus in her V91 cover story: “What is more fun than to shock the bourgeois anyway?” We couldn't have put it better ourselves.
