In 2009, near the end of a decade that was all but defined by look-alikes and menial minimalism, stylist and artistic director Nicola Formichetti began a creative collaboration with a girl named Gaga that would spawn a cultural coup d’état and bring maximalism and statement dressing back to the mainstream. From the head-to-toe Alexander McQueen straight off the runway for her “Bad Romance” music video to the infamous meat dress at the 2010 VMAs, Formichetti invented looks that would solidify the singer’s status as an icon in the fashion arena and help translate her musical genius to the world at large.

Of course, this is all public knowledge: Gaga has gone on the record numerous times singing the praises of their partnership. Perhaps what is less known is that this union began at V, when the two were introduced on the set of Gaga’s first photo shoot for the magazine, with photographer Sebastian Faena (V60). “V has always supported and allowed me to take chances on crazy fashion stories," says Formichetti. "It was on a shoot for V where I first met Lady Gaga, which turned into a wild journey!”

This wild journey led Formichetti to sign on as official creative director of the Haus of Gaga shortly after, and went on to style her next three V covers, with Mario Testino for V61 and V67, and Inez & Vinoodh for V71. His work with the pop star is but a sample of his contributions to the magazine over the years—an archive that also includes Justin Bieber’s V75 cover story, a wrestling match between Adriana Lima and Doutzen Kroes for V76, and Kate Upton clad in Diesel (for which Formichetti serves as artistic director) on the cover of V87.
