Lady Gaga chose to begin her Super Bowl halftime show by making a political statement—though not necessarily the one people were expecting. While it seemed certain that Gaga would send a clear anti-Trump message—after all, we are talk about the woman who posed with a sanitation truck outside one of his Towers immediately following the election—she opted for a much more subtle approach: one of unity.

Clad in head-to-toe Versace, the singer started atop the stadium while a sea of 300 drones (powered by Intel, naturally) lit up the Texas sky in the shape of an American flag as Gaga sang a rendition of "God Bless America" that quickly turned into "This Land Is Your Land." The latter song, penned by Woody Guthrie, is widely considered to be a protest anthem, with its original lyrics even referencing a "big wall." Then she jumped off the roof.

What followed was a medley of Gaga's greatest hits spanning her entire career: "Just Dance," "Poker Face," "Bad Romance," "Born This Way," and her most recent single, "Million Reasons," (Artpop was noticeably missing from the lineup.) She even brought back the disco stick for a moment during her rendition of "Telephone" (which, despite hints, sadly did not include a cameo from Beyoncé—not that Gaga needed it).

"Born This Way" was definitely a highlight of the show, continuing the theme of unity set by the opening act. Politically speaking, it may not have been as loud of a message as Beyoncé's "Formation" last year, but watching Gaga sing "No matter gay, straight, or bi/ Lesbian, transgendered life/ I'm on the right track baby/ I was born to survive" to an audience of millions certainly felt like a victory for inclusion (especially when that audience included Mike Pence).
