It's safe to say that as one of the most dazzling and enigmatic entertainers of all time Josephine Baker has led the way for a plethora of talented black beauties to flourish—Diana Ross, Whitney Houston, Janet Jackson and V girls Beyoncé and Rihanna, just to name a few.

Baker's lifetime is to be heralded: from becoming the first black woman to star in a major Hollywood production with Zouzou (1934), co-starring Jean Gabin, to insisting to perform for mixed audiences, defying the sixties' appalling segregation phenomena in the US. No wonder she was asked to succeed Martin Luther King, Jr. following his assassination as the unofficial movement leader (she declined for fear of her children's safety).

Prior to Baker's contributions as a civil rights activist, it was the singer and actress' memorable performances onstage and onscreen that made the twenties roar. Who could forget her infamous eroticism, where she danced in a skirt made out of artificial bananas at the legendary Folies Bergère, as well as her pet cheetah named Chiquita who often accompanied her onstage?

Irreverent, daring and audacious, Josephine Baker is considered a role model to many. Naturally, she would have dominated 2016 with a bang. Her sartorial choices would always be cheeky, sexy, and playful, all the while enhanced by her remarkable presence. The dearest cause to her heart? Encouraging and celebrating the kaleidoscopic mix of cultures.
