Nothing has been confirmed, but there are a few hints that suggest she will be, or at the very least, that she is the best candidate for the role.

FX recently announced that American Crime Story season 3 will be centered on the murder of designer Gianni Versace, brother to Donatella. The late Versace was shot down on the steps of his mansion in Miami. The early announcement (season 2 still hasn't aired) means that viewers have plenty of time to speculate on the casting, and they have their minds made up on who should play Donatella: Lady Gaga, of course.

Gaga makes sense for two reasons. First, the actress has a strong connection to Murphy who directs her on American Horror Story. Her role on that show won her a Golden Globe just this year. Two, Lady Gaga is a strong, vocal supporter of Donatella and her brand. On her 2014 album, Artpop, the singer wrote an entire song in her honor, aptly named "Donatella." Gaga has even channeled the designer's signature look for the house's Spring 2014 ad campaign. Their friendship is well-documented.

Furthermore, during Entertainment Weekly’s recent PopFest panel, moderator Tim Stack let Murphy know that he thought Gaga would be "the perfect Donatella" to which the director commented coyly, "Ya think?" It's not an outright denial, and in the world of speculation, it's as good as gold.

Here's the catch: Donatella has not endorsed or thrown any support behind the series. In an official statement, Versace, the brand, said they "neither authorized nor had any involvement whatsoever in the forthcoming series about Versace. The series should only be seen as a work of fiction."
