Sweet and soulful, the voice of Queens-born artist Diana Gordon (formerly Wynter Gordon) isn’t one you’ll likely to be familiar with, but if you are a fan of contemporary R&B, then chances are, you are familiar with her work. Over the years, she has produced material for some of the industry’s leading ladies, including Mary J Blige, Alicia Keys and Jennifer Lopez, as well as her latest collaboration with Beyoncé.

Unsurprisingly, Gordon’s exposure has peaked following her monumental lines on Lemonade. Specifically, she is the brains behind “Daddy Lessons,” Queen Bey’s first ever country(ish) song. She also co-wrote and co-produced “Sorry,” the track featuring pivotal lyric, “Becky with the good hair.” And speaking frankly, Gordon holds nothing back on her track “The Legend Of” as she sings “Beyoncé just wrote me a fat check.”

But her honesty isn’t limited to her admission of glittering, financial profit. One of the reasons Gordon hasn’t, until now, released music under her own name is because she’s long lacked the confidence in (and understanding of) her own muddled emotions and fluctuating life direction. She explains this in a vivid manifesto which accompanies the track. Opening up on past insecurities, she writes: “I turned my pain into stories and my stories into songs and sold them to the highest bidder. I had the most famous people in the world telling my story. Meanwhile nobody knew who I was. Including me.”

Now with her own soft sound, Gordon is enjoying a spike of creative momentum. Whether it was Beyoncé’s contagious energy or a slow-burning build up of personal confidence, “The Legend Of” screams empowerment. And with such impressive credits to her name, it’s almost certain Gordon will be gracing our ears with her own, rightful material again.
