YOU ONLY HAVE A FEW DAYS LEFT TO CATCH MARILYN MINTER'S SECOND SHOW AT REGEN PROJECTS IN LOS ANGELES. V ASKED HER WHAT SHE WAS THINKING ABOUT WHILE READYING THIS EXHIBITION, WHICH DEVIATES FROM THE EXPECTED GLAMOUR OF A MINTER MONOGRAPH, WITHOUT LOSING ANY OF ITS SPARKLE

SEE MARILYN MINTER'S EXCLUSIVE STORY FOR V79 HERE

The gratuitous sparkle of cheap glamour is the hallmark of Marilyn Minter’s paintings, which ooze with pearls and glitter decorating heel-bound feet and parted lips. “They take forever,” she says of the five, titanic new works on view at Regen Projects in Hollywood, each of which span multiple panels hung together. Painting from photographs, the artist usually shoots models, but for this body of work she digs into her past, re-photographing her own photographs and embellishing these already super-saturated images with graffiti-like brushstrokes.  In the back gallery is a comparatively sober series of black and white photographs that capture Minter’s mother at home in 1969 in their Fort Lauderdale high rise, peering into mirrors or reclining among paraphrenal plates and vials. “They really do show the thread of how everything I’ve ever done comes from living with that woman, my mother”—a recluse who struggled with substance abuse and pathological vanity—“and I didn’t figure that out until my 40s, believe it or not. I just never put two and two together. And I still don’t really think about it, but it’s what everybody writes about so it must be what I’m communicating!”

Marilyn Minter's work is on display at Regen Projects, L.A. until May 11th, 2013
