This feels like oxygen. David Lynch's forthcoming album, which is scheduled for a July 16th U.S. release, feels pretty promising after this preview stream featuring Lykke Li as the new Julee Cruise (or Chrysta Bell). The track combines the familiar waltzing tempo and breathy voice of a Lynchian longue singer with the unexpected tingle of cartoon bubble pops, and a simple, beautiful, six-minute music video. There is something endlessly interesting about the flat landscapes of the southwest caught on video, even when one’s field of vision is mostly taken up by road—and this is coming from an Arizona native. Li, who helped conceptualize the video with artist Daniel DeSure gives a voice to this sunset drive the way Hope Sandoval has before her, never stopping to figure out what her lyrics are referring to. After so many repeats, the refrain, “I’m waiting here” starts to feel empty of meaning, and full of longing, like the video’s search for the end of a horizon. We never get out of the car, and never learn what this song is about, with small clues like “I’ve burned a lot of bridges” eventually sounding more like sunburned memories than like conscious thoughts worth unpacking.
