LINDA SIMPSON DROPPED OFF SOME EXCLUSIVE PHOTOS AND THIS NOTE ABOUT HER SHOW IN NYC. JUST THE COOLEST PEOPLE OF NEW YORK'S 1980S, TOGETHER IN HER CANDID SNAPSHOTS, NO BIGGIE
My photos are included in a group show called New York, c. 1985, which runs through July 3rd at ClampArt Gallery in Chelsea. My contribution is a 50-photo slideshow of random snapshots that I took throughout the 1980s—of the club scene, early Wigstock, AIDS activism, celebrities, my own personal adventures... and the incredible dynamism of the era.
My photographer credit is Les Simpson because most of the pix were shot before Linda was born. The exhibit also features photos by Larry Clark, Nan Goldin, Amy Arbus and other great photographers. It's a real honor to be included.
Les Simpson arrived in New York from Minnesota in the early 1980s. Rather than pursuing a career, he spent much of the decade exploring and enjoying the city's varied cultural scene. In the late 1980s, he found his niche in the East Village alternative queer scene, where he joined the ranks of NYC's drag queens as Linda Simpson. Linda would go on to become a nightlife and media sensation.
