IF THE GOVERNMENT IS GOING TO SPY ON YOU, YOU MIGHT AS WELL LOOK FRESH AS HELL TO IMPRESS THEM
In an era of major label A&R overhauls, album delays, and meticulously market-tested, salability training for artists, there's something to be said for coming out with something RIGHT ON TIME.
Take, for example, "Feds Watching," the new video from the prolific and head-turning artist 2 Chainz, featuring ubiquitous man-of-the-summer Pharrell Williams. Not only does Chainz cash in on Pharrell's undeniable currency, but he manages to craft an aspirational diorama set in a modernist home surrounded by tropics, right in time for summer. It's a seasonal initiation, with a politically topical joke about superficiality that any self-aware American can relate to right as the U.S. government admits to spying on its citizens and a former CIA whistleblower attempts to seek asylum in Ecuador across hundreds of live stream info channels. 2 Chainz's immediate surrender to the invasion of his privacy lends new arrogance to not giving a fuck and showing off, two beliefs that have served as hip-hop flagpoles for decades. Somehow, though, still, it all seems fresh. (It could also be a commercial jingle for the latest Prada menswear collection.) Though some have written off his simple shout-along choruses, a message comes through loud and clear with this new track: never underestimate the wisdom of the Chainz.
