V SPENT A CHIC MORNING WITH DONATELLA VERSACE AND CHRISTOPHER KANE AT VERSACE'S FIRST-EVER DOWNTOWN BOUTIQUE

Soho got serious does of chic this morning when Donatella Versace and Christopher Kane previewed Versace’s new boutique on Mercer Street. Conceived by Versace and English architect Jamie Fobert, the first downtown New York shop for the brand is a seamless addition to the gilded legacy of Versace: revolving panels displaying merchandise, a mosaic tile floor modeled after Roman Basilicas, and futuristic plexiglass panels are some of the opulent visuals the space has to offer, altogether giving the sensation of walking along a curvaceous, Italian catwalk. “The uptown girl is very different from the downtown girl,” Versace said of the thought process that went into designing the new space. Part of the hip downtown charm lies in a curatorial series, beginning with limited edition items (notebooks, candy, iPhone cases, Medusa earbuds) designed by Christopher Kane. “People always ask me what I am inspired by and the answer is really cities. Each city I go to gives me energy and inspiration. Also, music.” When asked what her favorite music is of the moment she answered quite simply “I like Grimes.” Fittingly, Grimes’s music was playing in the store. “I like her voice. Her singing is effortless. I love Beth Ditto, because she is so confident. Nothing is better than a confident woman. I grew up with my brother, who had a certain idea of a woman that is very glamorous. I don’t know anything different!”

As for her own recipe for glamor, Versace offered some choice quotes. When asked about her beauty regimen, she joked “Of course, I sleep in the freezer!” On her take on flat shoes: “What is a flat shoe?” On her practice of working with Kane: “We fight! No, I’m joking, it’s easy.” And finally, what’s her favorite thing about fashion today?
“It would have to be contamination like this,” she said, grandly gesturing toward Kane. Realizing her malapropism (”collaboration” might have been what she intended to say) she carried the joke even further. “It’s like a virus! There’s no escape!” There's a slideshow of images from the store preview above.
