MORE TO LOVE
Wild Nothing's video for "Paradise" (on Nocturne), directed by Matthew Amato, stars Michelle Williams and mostly takes place in a plane. We're assuming it's shot on something almost as simple as a phone, and that it took less than a day to make, and maybe even less time than that to conceive. But therein lies the charm. Set to a quiet but vast track by the aptly named band, Williams's journey looks all too familiar, and so, startling. We're used to videos of this caliber and subject matter falling all over our various feeds, made by young bloggers and friends new to travel. We want to watch, but we also want to look away from the vulnerability of the lonely videographer. In this case, we're invited to watch without sensitivity, since a known actor is playing the part of the lost filmmaker. We look out the window with her, we read a book with her, we drink a Coke from a tiny plastic cup with her. And we remember her: the star has taken some big and dramatic roles in the recent past, but to a generation, she'll always be just like us, back then (the moody high schooler, Jen from Dawson's Creek) and sometimes now: still impressed by the hugeness of the world.
