ETHAN HAWKE TAKES THE STAGE

THIS MONTH, EVERYONE'S FAVORITE OSCAR NOMINEE AND TONY WINNER SWAPS THE BIG SCREEN FOR CENTER STAGE IN MACBETH. WHETHER HE'S ON BROADWAY OR HOLLYWOOD BOULEVARD, WE'LL TAKE ETHAN HAWKE'S ACTING CHOPS BECAUSE EITHER WAY, WHAT'S FAIR IS FOUL AND FOUL FAIR

Anybody who knows their Ethan Hawke-ology accurately can remember the actor’s headlining role in Michael Almereyda’s millennial screen adaptation of William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, in which the vengeful prince of Denmark is rendered through a modern, closed-circuit lens as a brooding film student in New York City. Fourteen years later, Hawke is bringing the Bard back to Manhattan as another doomed dignitary, in the Lincoln Center Theater’s Jack O’Brien production of Macbeth. And just like Hawke’s previous effort, this season’s interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s darkest and most popular tragedies is shaking things up in the visual department.

Known for his Tony-winning productions of Henry IV and Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopia, director O’Brien reinterprets the classic play inspired by the visual language of nightmares. Saturated in black and punctuated with blood reds and gleaming whites, the sets, costumes, and ephemera of the production brings the tale of greed, regicide, jealousy, and madness into a stark palette that boldly transmits the cautionary message of the play, while highlighting the sharp and magnetic performances of its cast, primarily Hawke and costar Anne-Marie Duff, as Lady Macbeth, inarguably one of the most towering and entertaining female characters ever conceived.

It may be mere coincidence, but it seems Hawke is ready to keep the canon coming. Following his Oscar campaign for Before Midnight, his third film penned in a series alongside Julie Delpy, the stage vet will return to the screen for Almereyda’s take on the less tragic (though equally bloodsoaked) play Cymbeline. Hawke will play Iachimo, the treacherous supporting character whose deceit spurs the play’s protagonists into harrowing circumstances. Dakota Johnson, Milla Jovovich, Ed Harris, Anton Yelchin, Penn Badgley and John Leguizamo round out the cast. Something wicked this way comes.

Ethan Hawke stars in MacBeth at the Vivian Beaumont Theater through January 12
