THIS CHRISTMAS, LOUISE GRAY WAS INVITED TO DESIGN A TREE AS A CENTERPIECE WITHIN HOI POLLOI AT ACE HOTEL, LONDON SHOREDITCH. SO GATHER 'ROUND FOR THE SECOND INSTALLMENT OF LOUD X FAST LONDON, IN WHICH MANDI LENNARD CATCHES UP WITH HER FAVORITE LONDON PARTY GIRL AND FASHION DESIGNER TO TALK FOUND DETRITUS, GIFT WRAP, AND CAPED CRUSADER CHRISTMAS TREE BAUBLES
A wowza tree! Was there method in this madness?
LOUISE GRAY Always, the theme was enjoyment. So it's a take on that.
I see there's a cheese grater; what else did you include in this seasonal assemblage?
LG Silver flip flops, a large 'I ♥ London' pen, fluffy handcuffs...
Anything you forgot to add that you wished you had?
LG I have a small umbrella with gold ears that needs to be added.
You seem to have a knack for making found detritus and offcuts of fabric attractive. Have you always had a killer magpie instinct?
LG I just like stuff and a lot of it!
Where's the best place in London to find shiny cool stuff?
LG Everywhere. My motto seems to be One man's trash is another man's gold this year.
I love how you wrap gifts and make individual cards with interesting materials. Can you share some packaging tips with V?
LG It's really about seeing the fun and beauty of throwaway stuff. I keep leftovers and trimmings throughout the year to make my cards and wrappings. I like them layered and loaded with jangle!
What are you listening to at the moment to get you in the Christmas groove?
LG Christina Aguilera's "The Christmas Song."
What's your Christmas tipple?
LG Brandy with hot apple.
How are you spending the holidays?
LG We have a superhero themed Christmas this year, complete with miniature capes that have been made for all the baubles on the tree.
