NO STOP 'TIL MILEY

TEXT GREG KRELENSTEIN

LAST WEEKEND, V TOOK A FIELD TRIP TO SEE ONE OF OUR FAVORITE STARS RETURN TO THE PLACE WHERE POSSIBLY HER BIGGEST CONTROVERSY YET WAS BORN—THE 2013 MTV VMAS BROOKLYN LOCATION, BARCLAYS CENTER—AND WE WERE BLOWN AWAY ALL OVER AGAIN

Miley Cyrus's New York stop along her Bangerz tour was the most fun a girl could have on a Saturday night! Returning back to the Barclays Center, the site where her 2013 MTV Music Awards performance drew endless global headlines and redefined the foam finger for a generation, Cyrus joyously tore through both the hits ("We Can't Stop," "Wrecking Ball") and the deep cuts ("Drive," "Rooting for My Baby," "4x4") of her genre-bending record.  A visual sensory overload fit for an arena spectacle, the show featured a backdrop of striking visuals showing different sides of her personality ranging from the goofy animation created by John K. of Ren and Stimpy to a short featuring stragetically placed duct tape that could sit nicely alongside Madonna's "Human Nature" video. Beyond the twerking that catapulted an already famous star further into the cosmos, Cyrus, like the great divas before her, now carries the torch of redefining what it means to be young and female on stage.

The crowd, primarily consisting of unaccompanied young girls, rallied for their elected spokesperson with screams usually reserved for boy bands. An experienced stadium star now, Cyrus graciously thanked her fans for their support as she mourned the passing of her beloved puppy Floyd,  who was represented as a large inflatable prop during "Can't Be Tamed."  The house party vibe of the show stopped for a short set on a satellite stage where Miley was able to serenade the crowd with covers of songs by Lana Del Rey, Bob Dylan, Coldplay, and her godmother Dolly Parton's "Jolene," because "everyone loves Dolly." Miley also slowed down the crowd during "Adore You," encouraging same sex makeouts in the crowd for a traveling kiss cam that displayed the results on the backdrop, filtered through an engagement ring. Whether sliding down an oversized tongue, grinding on top of a gold lowrider 4X4, or flying above the crowd on a hot dog, nothing could distract from her soulful voice.

The costumes—custom pieces by Jeremy Scott, Marc Jacobs, The Blonds Bob Mackie archive and more, blended rhinestone covered cowboy boots, gold chains, and pot leaf patterned leotards to create a hip-hop-meets-country style that's all her own. After all, she's still just being Miley! Closing out with "Party In The USA," the message was clear: This was her house, and her moment to raise as much hell as she wanted.

Catch the rest of the Bangerz tour, with opening acts Sky Ferreira and Icona Pop at a venue near you!
