HAPPY BIRTHDAY (AUGUST 1ST) TO THE INIMITABLE YVES SAINT LAURENT, WHO WOULD HAVE TURNED 78 TODAY. REFERENCED FOR HIS REVOLUTIONARY-TURNED-TIMELESS DESIGNS, THIS YEAR IS PROOF THE FASCINATION WITH THE LEGEND CONTINUES, WITH NOT ONE, BUT TWO YSL BIOPICS RELEASED IN 2014.
BELOW IS THE TEXT THAT ORIGINALLY APPEARED ALONGSIDE THE DESIGNER'S PORTRAIT IN V14, STILL RELEVANT TODAY AS IT EVER WAS
It is by now fair to say that Yves Saint Laurent is the most influential living designer of the twentieth century. Saint Laurent did not so much invent fashion as we know it (he is often quoted as saying that a woman needs only a sweater, a pair of trousers, and a raincoat in order to look well dressed), but rather quietly revolutionized it. Today, his prolific career has been distilled to a singular definition of what-it-means-to-be-chic and a handful of telling examples: The peasant looks, the trench, le smoking. Every designer of the current generation is either working in his long and elegant shadow--or is working in defiant opposition to the standard he established back in les années '70s. We wish them luck.
